How to choose your first pickleball paddle
Five trade-offs decide most of the outcome for a new player. Get these roughly right and the rest is preference.
1. Start with control, not power
New players win more points from consistency than from pace. A mid-weight, standard-shape, 16mm paddle is forgiving and keeps the ball in play while you learn placement.
2. Pick a weight you can swing all game
Most beginners land between 7.8 and 8.3 oz. Too light and you add your own swing to generate pace (harder on the arm); too heavy and you fatigue and lose reaction time at the net.
3. Favor a larger sweet spot
Standard and widebody shapes are more forgiving than elongated ones. Until your contact is consistent, a bigger sweet spot beats the extra reach of an elongated paddle.
4. Mind your arm
If you have any elbow or wrist history, prioritize arm-friendly paddles — softer cores and foam-filled perimeters dampen shock. It is the spec beginners regret ignoring most.
5. Set a sane budget
Plenty of capable paddles sit well under premium pricing. Spend enough for a carbon or fiberglass face and a quality core; you do not need the most expensive thermoformed model to start.
